The City of St. John's will be upgrading storm sewer infrastructure on University Avenue and Prince Philip Drive, from approximately 118 University Avenue to the north side of Prince Philip Drive. The new storm sewer will be installed through the intersection, crossing all lanes of Prince Philip Drive.

Construction is expected from August to October 2024, causing traffic delays due to lane reductions, diversions, and possible detours. The City will make every effort to minimize interruptions. Pedestrian access will be maintained during construction, and the public is asked to follow all posted signage in and near the construction zones.

The City of St. John’s will provide updates on traffic interruptions and progress throughout the duration of the project. You can review the project schedule on this page to follow progress of the project and subscribe to receive the latest City news and advisories.

A significant amount of work is being completed in the Memorial University area during the 2024 construction season which will impact the overall flow of traffic in the area. In addition to the above, the following projects will also be active in the area:

    Motorists are advised that University Avenue between Prince Phillip Drive and Paton Street will be closed to traffic due to ongoing construction works associated with the University Avenue Storm Sewer Upgrades project.

    Local access will be provided to properties located between Paton Street and the construction site; however, there will be no passage through the construction site. There will be no access from Prince Philip Drive.

    Signage will be in place and flag persons will be on site. Motorists are advised to seek an alternate route.

    University Avenue between Paton Street and Prince Philip Drive has been reopened to traffic. However, traffic is reduced to one lane, temporary diverted around the construction area and restricted to passenger vehicles only, including buses. Dump trucks and other large construction vehicles/equipment are not permitted to use the traffic diversion.

    Signage will be in place and flag persons will be on site. Traffic lights will be in place afterhours and on weekends. Traffic slowdowns and delays will be experienced, and motorists are advised to seek an alternate route if possible.

    Motorists are advised of the immediate closure of University Avenue between Prince Philip Drive and Paton Street due to unforeseen circumstances associated with the University Avenue Storm Sewer Upgrades project.

    Local access will be provided to properties located between Paton Street and the construction site; however, there will be no passage through the construction site.

    Signage will be in place and flag persons will be on site. Traffic slowdowns and delays will be experienced, and motorists are advised to seek an alternate route if possible.
