In February of 2018, the City of St. John’s adopted the Paid Parking Management Strategy that outlines a strategic direction for the Municipality’s paid parking management and a series of recommendations to improve the current system. The City has identified the need to install new payment hardware for several reasons:

- The City’s current model of Parking Meter is no longer supported/manufactured
- There has been extensive theft and vandalism destroying existing meter stock
- The strategy identifies many benefits from the use, where possible, of pay stations as opposed to single space hardware
- A one year trial for a cashless payment system is an action from the strategy

Will the new paystations/parking meters be able to issue receipts?

Yes, an option to print a receipt will be provided.

Hello, glad to see some movement on the cashless parking meter project. I currently have a prepaid Park Card that I happily use at meters (that still work), and I was wondering will I still be able to use this card at the new meters or pay stations? If not, what will happen to the balance on the card? I think the pre-paid card is the safest way for people to pay for parking as it is cashless and you don't have to pull out a credit card at the meter each time, so I would be happy to continue using the Park Card if that option is still available. Thanks, Dan

Thanks for your questions. The ParkCard will be phased out as the existing parking meters are replaced with new pay stations / meters. As part of the newly awarded parking equipment contract, we are exploring alternatives to the ParkCard and are hoping to offer a replacement ParkCard service.

As for any remaining balance on the Park Card, part of our work on a replacement is to determine if/how we can transfer the value from a ParkCard to the replacement. We will determine how to proceed with existing ParkCard value based on the results of these efforts.
