Traffic Advisory - May 1

1 May 2026

Work continues on the future roundabout at Portugal Cove Road, Major’s Path, and Airport Heights Drive.

Starting Monday, May 4 at 9 a.m., work will begin to facilitate installation of a large culvert across Portugal Cove Road at Virginia River.

Significant delays are expected on Portugal Cove Road, including lane reductions and diversions as follows:

  • Eastbound (toward the Trans-Canada Highway): Traffic continuing straight through the intersection will be reduced to a single lane. Turn lanes to Major’s Path (left) and Airport Heights Drive (right) will remain open.
  • Westbound (toward St. John’s International Airport): Traffic will be reduced to a single lane through the culvert replacement area. Traffic will then return to two lanes just before the intersection. Turn lanes to Airport Heights Drive (left) and Major’s Path (right) will remain open.

This stage of project is scheduled to last approximately 12 weeks. Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes if possible. Signage will be in place to direct traffic, and flag persons will be on site. The public is asked to follow all posted signage in and near the construction zone. Pedestrian traffic will be maintained.

The City of St. John’s will provide updates on traffic interruptions and progress throughout the duration of the project. You can follow progress for this project here at EngageStJohns.ca and/or subscribe to receive the latest City news and advisories.
