Traffic Advisory - Airport Heights Drive (Thursday, September 18)

17 September 2025

Work continues on Airport Heights Drive to support the multi-year Major’s Path and Portugal Cove Road Improvements project. Please note the updated traffic impacts below:

Starting on Thursday, September 18:

  • Airport Heights Drive will be reopened to two-way traffic at the work site, however, occasional lane reductions will be required to facilitate construction activities.
  • The right-turn lane from Portugal Cove Road (eastbound) onto Airport Heights Drive will be reopened to traffic.
  • The left-turn lane from Rhodora Street onto Airport Heights Drive will remain closed.
  • Motorists can continue to access Airport Heights Drive via the western entrance of Airport Heights Drive or Viscount Street.

This work is necessary to allow for the replacement of a large culvert on the Virginia River, located near Rhodora Street. Expect lane reductions, traffic slowdowns and detours until fall 2025.

The City will make every effort to minimize interruptions. Pedestrian access will be maintained during construction, and the public is asked to follow all posted signage in and near the construction zone.

The City of St. John’s will provide updates on traffic interruptions and progress throughout the duration of the project. You can follow progress here at EngageStJohns.ca and/or subscribe to receive the latest City news and advisories.
