What is recreation?

    The Framework for Recreation in Canada defines recreation as: "... the experience that results from freely chosen participation in physical, socially, intellectual, creative, and spiritual pursuits that enhance individual and community wellbeing".

    Recreation in St. John's includes structured and unstructured activities in a variety of indoor and outdoor settings, including playing pickleball with friends to joining a softball team, and participating in a dance class to visiting a museum. 

    What is a Recreation Master Plan?

    Recreation master planning is a comprehensive process to provide strategic guidance and policy direction to a local government related to the provision of recreation opportunities.  One way to think about this Master Plan project is as a “roadmap," that can help inform decision making and future collaborations between the City and community partners in the provision of recreation opportunities in St. John's.

    The Master Plan is based on thorough research and public engagement; it is also guided by a steering committee, consisting City administration from various departments including Recreation, Planning and Parks and Open Spaces.

    What other engagement activities are being done?

    The project team is engaging with sport groups and community organizations through community discussion sessions hosted in fall 2023 and winter 2024. 

    The City Advisory Committees have also been engaged to inform the master planning process.
