What is an inclusive city?

A city where people have a sense of belonging and are actively engaged in community life. A city that fosters diversity, where residents of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds feel safe, included, and connected with each other and the city.

    What is inclusion?

Inclusion is a way of thinking, a way of being and making decisions about helping everyone belong.  It is process of ensuring that all people, regardless of differences are welcome, belong, and are meaningfully engaged in the community. It is about recognizing and breaking down the attitudinal, access, ability, cultural, financial and systemic barriers that prevent people from meaningful participation in the community.

    What is diversity?

Diversity is the range of human differences such as race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs or other ideologies.

    Who needs inclusion?

The short answer is, we all need inclusion! According to Statistics Canada, more than 14% of people living in Newfoundland and Labrador self identify as having a disability.  With our aging population, it is predicted to grow to 21% by the year 2023.

    • 10,000 identify as LGBTQ2S
    • 9,800 have low income
    • 5,800 are a visible minority

Fostering inclusion not only improves the quality of life of individuals but it strengthens our communities. Research suggests that diverse, heterogeneous teams promote creativity, innovation and better decision-making.
