The new Goulds Fire Station will be a state-of-the-art facility that is being designed to a Passive House Standard. Passive House is a global science-based energy standard that focuses on 5 key areas during design and construction: high performing insulation to reduce thermal bridging, an airtight building envelope, high performance windows, heat recovery ventilation, and passive solar heating and cooling.

The City of St. John’s has adopted this standard for construction of the new fire station because it aligns with the Corporate Strategic Plan from an environmental and sustainability perspective as well as our goal to be net zero energy by 2050. This new facility will reduce operations and maintenance costs and will provide upwards of 90% reduction in space heating energy demands. The total cost of building ownership will result in 30-40% savings overall for the facility.

The new facility will be located at 371 Main Road, and it will house 3-drive through apparatus bays, a kitchen area, a living area, a sleeping area, a training area, and administrative space. Design of the station is 99% complete and we anticipate breaking ground in November 2025.
