Is this project on budget now that it is awarded?

Yes, the contract has been awarded and it is within the budget that has been allocated for the project.

What are the details of your partnership with MUN and NLESD in the short term and long term?

The City of St. John’s was the only organization that could apply and receive the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Plan (ICIP) funding which is being used to facilitate the build of the new amenities for the 2025 Jeux du Canada Games. We would not be able to proceed with construction of these new facilities without the successful partnerships we have developed with MUN and NLESD. They have generously provided the land where we will construct the amenities for the Games.

Wind was a failure point of the older track. Why are there no significant wind barriers or breaks built in here?

Wind is an issue in St. John’s no matter where you are holding an event. Lindsay Construction and their design team have thoughtfully laid out the track and field so that we are able to take advantage of the wind for throwing events, and to alter start and finish locations for track events depending on wind direction, allowing for more flexibility during the games. This design, in conjunction with a great landscaping plan and changes in elevations, will help to address some of the wind concerns.

How long will construction be ongoing?

Construction will be on-going for 2 years with substantial completion of the project anticipated in April 2025.

What impact will the construction have on the neighbourhood?

As with any major construction project the work area will be hoarded with fencing, and security on site after hours.

Heavy equipment will be operating in the area during between 7am and 6pm generally, with perhaps some longer evenings in the summer months.

What impact will construction have on traffic?

This project will be focused on site with some heavy equipment travelling to and from the area, with minimal disruption to traffic. The contractor has allocated three different access points to carry out construction for the new amenities. This will help by spreading out vehicular traffic and not creating one focal point of entrance and exit. A traffic control plan will be used during construction as well as to help facilitate getting larger pieces of equipment to and from the sites in a safe manner. Access will be from Paton Street, Westerland Road, Lambe's Lane, and Elizabeth Avenue in the future.

What impact will the construction have on MUN and Aquarena parking?

In order to construct the new FIFA Quality Pro Soccer Turf, the contractor will require access from Westerland Road. As a result, we will require access to one of the parking lots during construction. We are working closely with MUN to address this issue.

When is the Aquarena getting retrofit work done? Will it close?

Memorial University manages the Aquarena. Any questions related to that facility should be deferred to Memorial University.

Students and staff often travel through this area on foot as they come and go to MUN for classes. How will they be impacted?

The entire site, including PWC land off Paton Street, Lambe’s Lane, and Westerland Road will be enclosed with construction hoarding and signage. Students in the short term will not be able to cut through the site and will have to find an alternate route to the University via Elizabeth Avenue or University Avenue to maintain their safety during construction. Pedestrian signage will be erected to re-direct the public to sidewalks.

Once completed there are some large lights that will be erected and will light up this area at night. Do you anticipate this will impact residents on University Ave or surrounding area?

The lights will only be used when needed during activities. As this is a seasonal facility that will mostly be used in summer and fall, we expect lights will only be used for a short amount of time in the evenings, as we will have daylight for most activities. The lighting will be directed on to the track and field and soccer field and is not expected to have any major impact to residents living on University Ave.

How will the community access this facility in the future or is it for elite and varsity access only?

Details regarding the operational model for the amenities are still being worked on by the key stakeholders.

The intention is that this facility will foster the next generation of athletes, coaches, and referees and be open for public use, as well as training for elite athletes.

The track & field facility and soccer facility are being constructed to world class standards, better preparing the community for hosting international events which will be open to spectators from the community.
