Climate Risk Assessment

The City is undertaking a Climate Risk Assessment to better understand the risks that climate change and other hazards pose to our communities, infrastructure and services. By combining data on neighbourhoods, critical infrastructure, emergency preparedness, and community vulnerabilities, the City will create a detailed picture of where risks exist and who may be most affected.

The information will help the City and its partners make informed decisions about where to focus climate adaptation efforts and investments. The project will produce maps and risk assessments at the neighbourhood level, allowing the City to prioritize actions that strengthen resilience and better prepare for future challenges.

By the end of the project, the City will have improved its ability to plan for, respond to, and reduce the impacts of future hazards.

There are several ways to provide feedback, including an online survey and the below mapping tool. Feedback can also be provided by email at engage@stjohns.ca or by calling 311 or 709- 754-CITY (2489) and asking to speak with a member of the project team. Phase one of Public Engagement will remain open until November 27, 2026, with additional engagement opportunities to be provided in the winter of 2027 following a report on the first phase of engagement.

The City will also meet with its Advisory Committees, community organizations and other interested parties throughout the process.

Timeline item 1 - active

Phase 1 Engagement

Phase 1 gathers local knowledge and perspectives by engaging with local community groups and conducting an online feedback. Local organizations are being invited to share the survey with their members and networks to help reach a broad range of residents. The survey asks participants for information about the climate hazards affecting their community, areas of vulnerability, community preparedness and local priorities. The information collected helps to identify key concerns and inform the next phase of the climate risk and adaptation planning process.

What We Heard

The feedback gathered from public engagement highlight the climate risks and concerns that matter most to participants. It also identifies local priorities and practical ideas for reducing risk and preparing for future changes. These results will be used alongside survey findings, local knowledge, maps and other data to help guide the recommended actions.

Phase 2 In Person Workshops
Residents will be invited to attend a public engagement session to discuss climate-related risks and adaptation opportunities within the City of St.John's.

The session will include:
- Overview of local climate hazards and risks
- Presentation of hazard and risk mapping
- Discussion of local experiences and observations
- Identification of community priorities
- Interactive mapping and discussion activities
- Review of potential adaptation actions
No technical knowledge is required. Everyone is welcome.

Report released

The final report will bring together the survey results, feedback from the sessions, local knowledge, maps and other data. It will provide the City of St. John’s with a clearer picture of its key climate risks and the priorities identified by participants, and data. The report will also include recommended priority actions to help guide future planning, decision-making and efforts to make the city more prepared and resilient.
