Consultation has concluded

During the Envision St. John’s review of the Municipal Plan and Development Regulations, staff recognized that a Heritage By-Law would provide better protection of built heritage. A by-law derives its authority from the City of St. John’s Act, which has specific provisions for built heritage, whereas the Urban and Rural Planning Act is silent on built heritage. The City Act provides a more secure foundation for heritage protection.

The draft Heritage By-Law is presented for public review and comment. Following public consultation, feedback will be brought back to Council for consideration. The approval of the Heritage By-Law will be coordinated with the approval of Envision St. John’s to avoid any gap in heritage regulations. Check out the FAQs for additions to the bylaw. Why isn’t more more of the downtown included in this?

Thanks for your interest in the Heritage By-Law.  The existing designated heritage areas of the City cover most all of downtown St. John’s from the harbour to Empire Avenue, and from the Battery and Signal Hill area to Leslie Street.  There are some gaps in some neighbourhoods.  Area there specific areas that you have in mind? Please feel free to reach out through engage@stjohns.ca.

Neither St. Bonaventure’s College nor the Basilica Palace are designated by the City as Heritage Buildings.  A full list of City of St. John’s Heritage Buildings can be found here. For information about the process of designation, check out the website.
