Having a home that is affordable is:

• a key pathway out of poverty
• a foundation for a safe, prosperous and healthy community
• a sound public investment that contributes to resident well-being and the economy
• a human right enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

People across the income spectrum find it increasingly difficult to secure suitable, adequate and affordable housing. With one in four St. John's households struggling to pay for housing costs, the City's housing needs are currently not being met.

'On This Couch' is the second video in the 'Home is Home' campaign from the City of St. John's and its community partners. The campaign aims to debunk some of the myths association with affordable housing and to encourage individuals to reflect on their own perceptions and beliefs. NIMBY - or 'not in my backyard' - is the resistance to housing projects based on stereotypes, discriminatory attitudes and policies that have the effect of creating barriers for people. The City and partners would like to have an open dialogue about what affordable housing solutions might look like in your neighbourhood. What does 'affordable housing' mean to you?
