Re-Imagine Churchill Square
Consultation has concluded
Over time, Churchill Square has evolved to become an important public space for the city. Recently, the City has considered improvements to several aspects of Churchill Square including the proposed redevelopment of the old Dominion grocery store (click here), changes to the parking system (click here), and a need to upgrade and improve lighting (click here).
These initiatives allow us to look at other improvement opportunities that may exist. Now is the time to take a holistic look at this important area of the city; to re-imagine Churchill Square as a premiere public space for all residents of St. John’s.

The idea behind Churchill square was to provide the neighbourhood with all the amenities... Groceries, pharmacy, eye doctor, dentist, restaurants, coffee shops, pub, etc. Since the supermarket left, it feels like that multi purpose factor is gone. I would like to see that neighbourhood square come back, with more focus on walking and less on cars.

While Churchill has been considered a hero of WWII, his racism towards Indigenous people should not be commemorated in a province trying to reconcile its poor treatment of Indigenous people. The square would be better served being named after a unprejudiced historical figure, preferably a woman, an Indigenous person, a LGBT+ person, or a person of colour.

Less a parking lot and more multipurpose space for pedestrians and shops, perhaps the popup markets
0 comment12Doug Housealmost 4 years agoMake it into a square again. Eliminate the road down the middle, make at least part of the square a green space. No high rise buildings.
0 comment2David Thompsonalmost 4 years agoMore greenery. Many trees. Grassy areas with benches and picnic tables. an aesthetically pleasing place to be.
0 comment3Anita Carrollalmost 4 years agoA proper community square
I hope to see people shopping local stores, sitting outside in cafes ( with blankets on their laps if need be!) and at least half the parking lot utilized for sitting, lunching, local farmers, local food vendors.
0 comment13pramsdenalmost 4 years agoA place to buy groceries, to get a cappuccino, to get a beer; greenery (trees, plantings, grass), walkways, benches, sheltered spaces.

0 comment9Anita Carrollalmost 4 years agoless parking, more useful outdoor space
Encourage staff to take public transit, find a parking lot off site that's close by ( a dream maybe, I realize that's not that easy) that can be used for staff and shoppers. Cut the parking lot in half at least and provide services for outdoor space and vendors.
0 comment6aealmost 4 years agoBike Racks
They should be there in multiple places and stay all year. There was one there last year for a couple of months. I have no idea where it is now, but there is absolutely nowhere to lock a bike (unless you put it on the wheelchair ramp). This prevents me from shopping in the square on a daily basis.

Today I have to chain my bike to the wheelchair ramp. Install some bike racks please.

What was once a thriving neighbourhood centre seems to be limping along, with no plan in sight. So glad to see it's going to get some love ad attention.
