Accessibility Upgrades to Rawlins Cross

The City of St. John’s has advised that an accessible curb ramp will be installed at the new temporary crosswalk on Monkstown Road, east of Rennie’s Mill Road. The city is contracting to have to work completed as quickly as possible.

The new curb ramp on Monkstown Road will be based on universal design principals to accommodate many different types of pedestrians, including wheelchair users, those with a visual impairment, those pushing a stroller, and others who benefit from a smoother transition between the sidewalk and the road surface.

The Rawlins Cross Traffic Circle Pilot Project has not removed or reduced the accessibility of any crosswalks in the area. All existing crosswalks throughout Rawlins Cross have previously, and continue to have, curb ramps at the transition to the sidewalk.

Two new temporary crosswalks installed as part of the pilot project are in locations where no existing curb ramp is available. One is on Monkstown Road, east of Rennie’s Mill Road – which is currently being addressed - the other is on the southwest corner of Prescott Street and Queen’s Road where there is a set of stairs.

A third new crossing area on Military Road immediately east of King’s Road does benefit from existing curb ramps.
