What is BlindSquare Event?

BlindSquare Event App is the free version of the BlindSquare App that is available when the user is in the vicinity of a registered event. The app makes use of the latest features available in smartphones to assist those who are blind, have low vision or those who prefer to use wayfinding technology, with orientation and mobility information.

    How does BlindSquare work?

BlindSquare determines the user’s location using GPS capabilities along with information from Foursquare and Open Street Map. Employing unique algorithms, it will then provide the user with useful information in a clear, synthetic voice.

What type of device do I need to use BlindSquare?

Currently, BlindSquare works with iPhones and iPads that are operating iOS 5 or greater. Unfortunately, versions for Android, Windows, and Symbian phones are not available but an Android version is expected in 2023.

How much does it cost the City to offer Blind Square?

The cost to offer this feature at the pedestrian mall is $11,080.00. This accounts for network set up, consultancy, messaging and design and full CNIB assistance. If the City continues to offer the feature, ongoing annual fees with full CNIB service amendments are $2100.00 per year.

What will be used to inform recommendations to Council?

The City of St. John's will receive and analyze feedback from the public, City staff, CNIB and the City's Inclusion Advisory Committee. The information will be gathered via survey, focus group, and open-ended feedback through email, phone and Access 311.
